In 2021, The Minister of National Defence of Canada, the Honourable Harjit Sajjan and his American counterpart Llyod James Austin III issued a joint statement on efforts to modernize the Cold War era Arctic radar sites designed to provide early warning for Soviet bombers and Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) called the North Warning System (NWS). As seen in Fig. 1, the northernmost chain of radar which were built in the late 1980s and early 1990s and formed the backbone of the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD), an agreement between the US and Canada to defend the North American continent against our adversaries.
